OF-07 Paygrade. Rank is between Captain and Rear Admiral.
This is the first of the “Flag” ranks.
These officers hold Presidential Commissions and must be confirmed at their ranks by the Assembly.
At this level, Fleet Officers are no longer placed as a Ship’s CO, assigned Ship CO’s report to them. They usually command a Battle Group. The Battle Group ship they command from is referred to as a "Flagship".
They may also be placed in command of medium sized bases, or as XO of large and very large bases where appropriate.
While the Union Fleet rank structure is more or less a continuation of United Earth Fleet ranks ,which in turn take their origin from Pre Astre Earth fleets (and the largest at the time of the Ascent was the US Navy) The immense scale of the Union Fleet has and does show this system somewhat inadequate. The reintroduction of the Commodre rank is a reflection of this.

The Union Fleet Rank structure reform started in 5048 begun with a study to keep the rank structure as uncluttered as possible but introduce new levels , that reflect the Union Fleet structure of Fleet >>>Battle Group >>> Battle Cluster >>> Vessel Command , Non Vessel Command
The new ranks introduced in 5049 after the study was completed are : BGC - Battle Group Commodore ,
BCCBattle Cluster Commodore , LC Lead Commander .
