A maggot is the larva of a Terran fly (order Diptera); it is applied in particular to the larvae of Brachyceran flies, such as houseflies, cheese flies, and blowflies, rather than larvae of the Nematocera, such as mosquitoes and Crane flies. "Maggot" is not a technical term and should not be taken as such; in many standard textbooks of entomology it does not appear in the index at all. In many non-technical texts the term is used for insect larvae in general.
Maggots are enjoyed by a wide group of Union Species. It is a popular imported food among the Tinkehel and several avian based life forms. An Archa Ice crème (Musca Gelati) is popular with the Archanoids. It is one of the few solid foods eaten by the Klack. The Black Klack consume and import large quantities, (making maggot production the main industry of New Africa). Nuabe Farms of New Africa produces prepacked food items featuring maggots, among them the popular Maggots and Chives Stir Fry.
The maggot industry is a multi trillion credit business with an annual production of approximatley 5.5 trillion tons. Produced on many planets, but none as big as the Maggot farms of New Africa.
