LDP

Long Distance Probes (LPDs) are used to multiply the effectiveness of the Explorer fleet.

One of the first goals developed by the Union science council was to survey every star and planet of the M-0 Galaxy[1]. The Explorer Division uses highly intelligent long distance probes (LDP) carrying 100 SII-AEOS survey robots aboard to reach this goal.

These spherical robots have a diameter of 8 meters and can operate in virtually any environment from vacuum to gas giants.

Once a probe reaches a study object (Star or planetary system) it releases its army of robots who visit the various objects and begin with a detailed scientific scan and survey )

The so gathered data is then transmitted to the science council Explorer and Survey Division Central Computronic ( VASCO ) either via GalNet or if out of range via Data Drone. LDPs launched by an explorer ship and still in contact with the same transmit either a copy of the report to VASCO or a summary depending on one of two conditions[2].

The LDPs are instructed to avoid contact with sentient life but report encounters. If contact is unavoidable or accidental, the robots will retreat and send a priority message to VASCO.

LDPs are armed and can defend themselves. They have a specialized Nanite factory aboard for Data Drone or Repeater Buoy production. These Nanite factories are also able to produce SII-AEOS robots and repair them.

If the robots survey a Gardenworld or a world with a biosphere, a priority message is sent to VASCO for scientist review.

Several million LDPs are deployed in each galaxy with a Union presence.

The Explorer and Survey division nicknamed the robots "Cook Balls" after James Cook the famous explorer.

[1] As members from other galaxies have been added, having a survey of all the planets and stars of that galaxy has been made into an additional goal.

[2] The LDP will send it's "parent" explorer ship a summary for systems that contain neither biospheres or "gardenworlds". Those in systems that contain biospheres, especially if they are compatible with at least one Union Species will send a follow up message giving those details. Discovery of sentient lifeforms - especially TL 2 or above is also communicated to the "parent" ship.
