The Reagan Trophy Challenge is a series of competitions between the best scoring Cadet / Midshipmen teams. By tradition, every Midshipmen Academy, Academy Ship and the USS Devastator are allowed one team each[1]. The midshipmen team with the highest score within a Battle Group also qualifies for the event.
Initially held on Newport Elite Academy, it was suspended in 5020 as a result of the events that lead to the closure of that academy. When resumed in 5022, it's location began rotating between the various academies.
Until the 5019 challenge which was the last held under the old rules, the format was that for a period of a week, there would be a series of competitions that would qualify 20 teams for the final event. The final event would change every year as well as the order and number of points for the other competitions. This was later discovered to be designed to benefit the Newport Elite Academy team.
Upon resumption in 5022, the order and importance of the events used to qualify for the final event was standardized and the final event itself was known beforehand to be one of 20 possible events. The final event was chosen by randomly out of the events that had not been used in the previous five years.
After 5022, the Judges for the Challenge were chosen randomly from a pool that includes all Union Officers.
